A damaged window pane could be a source of frustration. It could also be a chance to upgrade your glass to energy efficient or insulated windows and benefit from greater comfort, a higher resale value and reduced utility bills.

It's a project you can take on yourself for only a fraction of the cost of hiring an expert. It requires the right tools and an hour or two of your time.

Glass

If your single-pane windows are outdated damaged, cracked or deteriorating replacing them with more modern glass that is tempered or insulated will increase energy efficiency and reduce noise while also preserving the historical integrity of older homes. Most homeowners with basic hand tools can repair the window pane. Alongside a replacement pane, the following items are required such as latex glazing putty; pliers, glazier's points and a heat gun for warming the old putty if required. Before starting, wear gloves and safety glasses as working with broken glass can cause injuries.

Remove any broken glass pieces remaining. It is recommended to use pliers for this however a flathead could be used equally. Then, use a wooden chisel or putty knife to remove the rest of the old putty around the frame and the sash. Be careful not to scratch the window handle replacement sash. Fortunately, windows can be easily replaced by simply putting a brand new piece of glass in its the proper place. Then, push it into the rabbets, where the glass will rest. If the new pane has a crack then you can seal it with a solvent-based glass glue or silicone caulk prior to pressing it into the sash. Otherwise, you'll need to putty over the crack to create a tight seal and keep water out. After the putty has dried and the film is oily, wipe it off the glass with the help of a rag. Allow it to completely dry before painting. If you paint before the putty has completely dry, it won't create a solid seal and could leak or discolor in time.

Paint

You might be worried about replacing a damaged piece of glass. It's true that replacing a single piece of glass doesn't need to be costly if you do it on your own. Even a double-paned window can be replaced for a fraction of what it will cost a professional.

First, if you're working on a large window, make sure that it is securely attached to the frame. This can be made relatively simple and fast using the right tools and techniques.

When you are ready to start taking down the old window pane. Remove the metal glazing points that are attached to it. These are small metal triangles that function as "nails", holding the window in the frame. They are submerged under a bead of glazing putty that hardens into a solid, formed wedge that holds the window firmly in place and hides the edges.
